Educator Of Week: Cory Valentine

By Jessica Light

Our Educator of the Week, is a special holiday edition.

We head to Brookside Elementary to meet a teacher who is everyone's funny Valentine.

All of these kids have a Valentine this year... their 5th grade teacher, Mr. Valentine.

"I just love how he teaches, it's fun and he makes me want to come to school," says Rachel Smith.

Smith nominated Mr. Valentine because he's just so funny.

And her classmates agree, their teacher was blessed with a great sense of humor.

"In spelling sometimes like a normal teacher would just say the word, but he says the word and then makes a sentence that says something about you, like 'Breenden ran into a building, building," says student, Breenden Naro.

Being funny may come naturally but keeping the classroom under control can be a challenge.

While these kids may look well-mannered Mr Valentine says they're not perfect. So what does he do when they get out of hand?

"Sometimes you gotta call people out on the carpet and I know through my life I've been called out on the carpet on things and its made me better," says Cory Valentine.

And he says parents need to be involved.

He sends home a news letter each week that keeps mom and dad in the loop.

"You have to have a triangle to make this thing work. You gotta have the teacher, the parents and the kid working together and if you can't have everybody working, all the points working together, its going to make for a long year," says Valentine.

Rachel says her mom appreciates those newsletters and even joins in on his humor too.

"My mom made up a joke, he's Mr. Valentine he's got all heart," says Rachel.

Love is in the air for a very funny Valentine... Our Educator of the Week.
